Membership Requirements

In order to be a member of the American Legion, you must have been on active duty with the Armed Forces of the United States of America for at least one day during one of the following periods of conflict:
WWI 6 April 1917 – 11 November 1918
WWII 7 December 1941 to 31 December 1946
WWII (Merchant Marines) 7 December 1941 to 16 August 1945  
Korea 25 June 1950 to 31 January 1955
Vietnam 28 February 1961 to 7 May 1975
Grenada-Lebanon 24 August 1982 to 31 July 1984
Panama 20 December 1989 to 31 January 1990
Persian Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan 2 August 1990 to TBD

You must have been Honorably Discharged or are still serving Honorably in the Armed Forces. Please note that, due to the repeal of "Don't Ask. Don't Tell", Post 448 does not recognize discharges from the Armed Services under 'less than honorable conditions', when such discharge was made for 'Homosexual Conduct'. Veterans discharged for such conduct are welcome to apply and acceptance for membership is subject to review of your DD214 and other pertinent discharge papers. Post 448 will assist the new member in upgrading their discharge to Honorable.

Armed Forces of the United States of America is defined as being the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marines of the U.S.A.

The dues for membership in Post 448 are $35.00 annually.

Membership in the Sons of the American Legion is reserved for those male children, grandchildren, or other accepted relation of an Honorably Discharged Veteran who would qualify as a member of the American Legion. Dues for SAL are $20.00 annually.

If you are not eligible for membership in the American Legion or SAL, you may wish to join the Alexander Hamilton Veterans Association. Members in the Association share in all activities of the Post, but cannot hold office or vote. Dues in the Association are $20.00 per year.

When submitting an application for membership, it should be accompanied by a copy of your DD214 or equivalent separation papers. In lieu of a DD214, a Service Verification Form may be submitted. Service Verification Form

Transfers
If you are currently a member of another American Legion Post and would like to transfer to Post 448, complete and submit the form and we will send you the transfer form for signature. You should receive an email response to this form within 48 hours. 

Paid Up For Life Option

Members in Good Standing may opt to pay dues according to a set national schedule so they don't have to worry about paying yearly dues. PUFL membership is not a discounted membership but is set according to your Post's dues schedule. There is also an option for time payment of PUFL Memberships. Yearly dues for Alexander Hamilton members is as follows:

Alexander Hamilton Association $20.00

These dues are good through the Dues Year 2012. Dues for the year 2013 will be increased.

Information about Your DD214
Post 448 has a program to digitally scan and store the DD214 and other military records of our members. You are encouraged to email your document to adjutant@post448.org or mail copies of your DD214 and any other record you wish to protect to the Adjutant at our PO Box address (see above). If your records are lost or destroyed, you can get copies form us at no cost. Please also remember that if you are considering applying for an up grade to a "Gay Discharge", a copy of your DD214 and medical records are required.
